Notable new reporting on Prez Trump and his Administration’s latest mulling of marijuana rescheduling

Trump-on-Marijuana-BankingIt is now almost three years since then Prez Joe Biden asked the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Attorney General to “initiate the administrative process to review expeditiously how marijuana is scheduled under federal law.”  In my  post here about the announcement back in  October 2022, I speculated  “that it will take years, not months, and that there is sure to be lots of debate over the science and politics of rescheduling.”  We now have, of course, a new President, and one who on the campaign trail last year, as noted here, stated on socal media that his administrayion “will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common sense laws, including safe banking for state authorized companies, and supporting states rights to pass marijuana laws.”   Now, according to press pieces from multiple sources, Prez Trump may be getting closer to making good on this campaign promise:

From CNN, “Trump is privately mulling how to declare pot a less dangerous drug

From Marijuana Moment, “Trump Says He’s ‘Going To Look At’ Marijuana, As White House Chief Of Staff Receives Rescheduling Reports

From MSN, “Trump’s Potential Shift on Marijuana Policy Could Reshape the Cannabis Industry

From the Wall Street Journal, “Trump Weighs Reclassifying Marijuana as Less Dangerous Drug

These reports do not suggest to me that much, if anything, has changed with respect to Prez Trump’s and his Administration’s views on these issues.  I sense that Prez Trump is mostly concerned about the political pros and cons of action on marijuana, perhaps especially as he gets more focused on the 2026 midterm election.  Meanwhile, I suspect others in his Administration are somewhat more focused on broader public health and public policy issues.  How all this will play out in the coming weeks and months and years remains to be seen.
